Summer means beautiful, quenching, life-giving rain. Where, after the first rain, we start to see just how nature thrives, the season of just surviving is over. So, how do we translate that into our own lives?
Have you ever wondered how some people seem to succeed in all areas of life, with a dream job, cool friends, a loving family, and a flourishing side hustle? According to new research, there is actually something that sets’ thrivers’ apart from others who are going through life just trying to survive.
What is the most googled question? What is everyone asking? The answer: How to be happy?
The secret, I believe, is mindset. Everything you will ever need to be happy is within you.
Having just completed the Breathwork practitioner foundation course, facilitated by Dr Ela Manga, it has become even clearer, that true happiness is found deep within yourself.
Researchers did a deep dive, looking at studies on everything from acing academic tests, athletic performance, career accomplishments, and even longevity. Through their digging, a common theme kept popping up: People who felt good about life and themselves, whilst being good at something (anything), were more likely to hit that “thriving” threshold.
It appears to come down to an individual experiencing a sense of development, improving a skill and eventually mastering it.
Dr. Brown, a scientist at the University of Portsmouth in the UK, found that there were a few key personality traits of which, successful people had at least one. These include; being optimistic, spiritual or religious, proactive, motivated, adaptable, and socially competent.
He also found that having one or a more of these traits, coupled with having a strong support system, a calm environment, pursuing a hobby, or a career that challenges you, resulted in a the almost utopian state of thriving.
This shows that, although life success isn’t 100 percent controllable, we are able to shape our worlds purely by our outlook, as opposed to bemoaning the cards with which you find yourself.
My own personal journey from surviving to thriving is something I would like to share with you, just in case it will help at least one person.
Before taking over Woodlands Spa, I believed that I tried to live a mindful life, being mindful of others, being kind and generous, but I have always felt stuck, people took advantage of me as I am a people-pleaser and a pushover. I was constantly looking for something that would fulfil me, as if something was missing. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I lost my twin in utero, but I was leading a textbook life.
I had a beautiful family, I was living my dream of being a work from home mother, I had many friends, but still something inside of me was dead, I was in and out of hospital all the time, I was anorexic and sick, I spent my life at doctors’ rooms trying to figure out what was wrong with me… until I set foot at Woodlands and embraced everything it had to offer.
I see Dr Ela regularly for Breathwork sessions, I have Reiki to balance my energy fields, I meditate and breathe in the morning on the deck while having my morning cappuccino, I envision my plans for the future and have made many changes to my lifestyle and make conscience choices in how I spend my time, who I keep close and what I allow in my life and now I truly live a mindful life. I have embraced Woodlands and it has embraced me. I live and breathe my brand, essentially it is an extension of me, so, I work tirelessly to ensure the service I give is the service I would expect. I firmly believe that is why Woodlands Spa is such a success, and ultimately that is why guests keep on coming back, as they also have this shift in their entire being after spending time with us.
I would like to invite you to come for the next Breathwork session, on Saturday the 4th of November from 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm. Space are limited, so to book, please email me directly at email@example.com.
2018 Begins now!
What type of year will you choose? It has become traditional in our working culture, to drive ourselves towards the end of every year, hanging on at the brink of burnout, desperately clinging to the prospect of our Festive Season break. Then we return in January, hopefully refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to start again.
Imagine ending 2017 off feeling centred, not splintered? What could your organisation achieve in 2018 if its members ended 2017 relaxed, creative, positive and aligned? What if, instead of a group of individuals focused on surviving until the holidays, December delivered a team enthusiastic to start a new year? What if you could start 2018 with:
- Greater team cohesion
- Reduced risk of burnout
- Better work/life management
- Higher interpersonal awareness
- Better general wellbeing
- Team flow

To change your life, you have to change yourself. To change yourself, you have to change your mindset.
A beautiful day begins with a beautiful mindset. When you wake up, spare a thought about what a privilege it is to simply be alive. The moment you start acting like life is a blessing, I assure you it will start to feel like one. May you have a beautiful October and spend time living a life worth appreciating.
